The Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) is coming: Is your customs broker software ready?

The Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) will become the single gateway to enable the international trade community to submit import- and export-related information to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

U.S. Customs has refined its transition to ACE, which will replace the current Automated Commercial System (ACS) for trade data processing. In addition to CBP, there are nearly 50 additional Participating Government Agencies (PGAs) that have some degree of oversight of shipments for entry in varying degrees.  The International Trade Data System (ITDS) is a federal agency program that assists PGAs in identifying, documenting, and executing their plan to leverage ACE to improve business operations and further agency missions.

For example, the Document Image System (DIS) is an ACE feature that eliminates the need to send paper forms to the US government in order to comply with import and export regulations. Multiple PGAs are already onboard with ACE-enabled DIS functionality.

With ACE on the horizon, it is important to ensure that your customs filing software is not just compliant with ACE and other initiatives, but is an industry pioneer who helps ensure that such initiatives are workable by the trade in their everyday operations.

In addition, since functionality in ACS is slated for termination, your customs broker software should not only include just ACE functionality, but added features such as:

  • Status querying
  • Searchable documentation (when enabled by ACE rollouts)
  • Document imaging capabilities
  • A fully-customizable parts database
  • An integrated, turnkey product structure
  • Options to submit security filing data for the Importer Security Filing (ISF), air and ocean Automated Manifest Systems (AMS) - CBP.gov
