4,000-Driver Fleet Reduces Accidents Through Driver Development
A 4,000-driver fleet dedicated to providing excellent supply chain solutions for its customers was experiencing rising accidents and growing liability. To get ahead of risk and improve safety outcomes, the company needed a better way to manage driver development at scale.
The Challenge
Although the fleet already took driver safety seriously and assigned development plans to drivers in the bottom 5% of safety based on their internal scorecard system, the process had become difficult to sustain. Tracking more than 200 plans each month through spreadsheets and manual workflows made it hard to maintain visibility, track progress, and ensure drivers received the attention and follow-up needed to support lasting improvement. As a result, accidents continued to rise.

The Solution
Using Descartes Fleet Safety, the fleet was able to streamline and strengthen its driver development process. The solution enabled the safety team to assign Professional Development Plans (PDPs), track every task and training activity through completion, schedule follow-ups, and monitor progress in one place. With greater visibility into the process, managers could better organize development plans and measure the effectiveness over time.
In just six months, the team created 484 Professional Development Plans and completed more than 6,300 tasks through the Descartes Fleet Safety platform.
The Results
Reduced Accidents and Injuries
Improved visibility into driver performance and more consistent follow-up led to a 64.7% decrease in accidents per driver and a 23% reduction in loss time injury rate.
Lower Injury-Related Costs
By strengthening driver development and reducing incidents, the fleet cut injury costs from $7.3 million to $5.4 million, saving $1.9 million.
More Effective Driver Development
More efficient workflows helped the safety team support at-risk drivers more effectively and improve outcomes across all three divisions, resulting in a 15% reduction in average Driver Watch List Scores.
