Customs Management Software FAQ'S

What is customs management software and how does it operate?

Customs filing solutions, often called customs brokerage software or customs management systems, are tools designed to simplify and optimize customs declarations and compliance processes for importers and exporters.

When choosing a customs management solution, it’s important to understand the different cost factors involved. By reviewing elements such as infrastructure, modules, user licensing, and other key considerations, you can determine which option is the best and most cost-effective fit for your business.

Whether you’re a freight forwarder, haulier, or trader, customs management software helps you:

  • Prevent expensive customs delays by automating documentation and submissions.
  • Maintain compliance with constantly-evolving customs regulations.
  • Minimize mistakes that could result in penalties or shipment rejections.
How does eDouane relate to LUCCS?

eDouane serves as Luxembourg’s central online access portal for all digital customs services, while LUCCS is the core customs declaration system itself. After logging in through eDouane, users can access key LUCCS modules, including the LUCCS–NIS (National Import System) for submitting import declarations, the LUCCS–Export module for lodging export declarations, and the LUCCS–Transit (NCTS) module for handling Union transit procedures.

Descartes Customs will manage the connection to eDouane and LUCCS, provide users with a simple, streamlined, fully digital workflow for managing customs formalities in Luxembourg.

Do I need an EORI number to submit customs declarations in Luxembourg?

Yes. You need a valid Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number to submit customs declarations in Luxembourg.
The EORI number is mandatory for all companies carrying out customs formalities within the European Union, including Luxembourg.

Any business importing, exporting, or placing goods under transit procedures in Luxembourg must use its EORI number for every declaration submitted through LUCCS (including NIS, Export, and Transit).

If you don’t yet have an EORI number, you can apply for one with the customs authority of the EU Member State where your company is established. Once issued, the number is valid throughout the entire European Union.
