On August 1st, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will move to a 100 percent air freight screening requirement.

The Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007 is a Congressional mandate requiring 100 percent of cargo transported on a passenger aircraft be screened beginning August 1, 2010 (only weeks away). Simply stated, all air cargo must be screened at the piece level prior to transport on a passenger aircraft for flights originating in the United States. On August 1, 2010, this mandate will be thoroughly enforced by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and TSA inspectors will be actively ensuring compliance.

While many are saying it’s nearly impossible – Descartes can help ease the burden for our customers.

Delays on TSA certification of scanning equipment, trust issues regarding international protocol differences and shippers' concerns over sensitive or high-value cargo are adding to the general belief that the August deadline may not be met, but will certainly be a step in a much longer, winding road.

But all carriers and forwarders using Descartes GFX-Exchange and/or Cargobooker with pre-screened cargo can simply manage these shipments when making their bookings by using specialized handling codes set out by IATA.  A simple click of a button when making an electronic booking will provide information to the carriers that your shipment has been pre-screened.  For specific carrier requirements you should contact your local carrier.

Securing our cargo whether it’s crossing the borders or moving within our countries is key to making the world a better place through logistics.
