Contracts are the core of the transportation management process. Enable your organization to effectively leverage the negotiated lanes and preferential terms established for your business by centralizing your contracts within an electronic database that has the capability to provide access and innovative decision support tools for your transportation management team.
Descartes has developed rich contract management functionality that can handle multimodal agreements with significant flexibility, provide for ease of set-up and role based access. We support thousands of contracts and millions of rate lines in real time. Customizable geography definitions for lanes, zones, transit times, effective dates, and notification of expiring contracts can be incorporated into carrier profiles. Descartes’ contract management capabilities also support the entry of “Reseller Contracts”. “Reseller Contracts” are contracts between a shipper and its own customers in which it is passing along the costs of a shipment through a carrier (with a margin, or otherwise).
Descartes addresses mode specific contract rules and rating such as:
LTL/TL freight class mappings, discount structures, and coverage areas: The solution supports industry standards such as SMC3 RateWare for North American LTL and parcel rating, CZARLite tariffs and hundreds of individual published carrier tariffs available in Software-as-a-Solution (SaaS) options from SMC3.
Ocean contracts, rates and price management: Total ocean freight rates are made up of a complex combination of base rate, surcharges and inland rates. Attempting to “dumb down” the rates by more generalized transportation management system (TMS) solutions produces inaccurate results, robbing revenues and margins for carriers and resulting in higher costs for shippers. Descartes can assist logistics service providers and shippers with the ability to centralize disparate rate management systems into a single, global system. Descartes enables customers to create and manage both buy-side and sell-side rates digitally; enforce a standardized global pricing policy; implement a global rate request process; and effectively leverage rate information to improve productivity, profitability and customer service.
Carrier compliant parcel rates: Small package rating, manifesting and labeling is available, including fully compliant interfaces for small package carriers like UPS, FedEx, DHL and hundreds of other small package and LTL carriers. Note that only a select few solution providers, including Descartes, maintain full compliance with the integrated package carriers such as the UPS Ready program.
Air freight: With Descartes, carriers distribute product, routing, capacity and rate information to forwarders 24/7 in real time, while forwarders can access this carrier information and make electronic bookings at any time. Integration of cost tables with contracts also allows for deeper analysis to improve asset utilization and overall margins.
